Constellations Science and Stories in the Sky

Live Webcast: July 28 | 4pm EDT / 2pm MDTSummer is the finest part of the year for stargazing because it offers warm nights and the beauty of the Milky Way running straight overhead. The constellations we see have been passed down to us across generations with patterns that reflect different stories from around the world.

As part of STAR Net‘s Sky Stories campaign, the American Museum of Natural History’s own Carter Emmart will show you how to identify the constellations and introduce you to a few of these stories while exploring some of the science behind the familiar patterns in the sky.

Ask an Astronomer
During the live webcast, library patrons will be able to interact with American Museum of Natural History scientist, Dr. Jackie Fahrety, by asking questions (using the chat feature) that relate to constellations.

This live OpenSpace webcast is brought to you by the STAR Library Network’s NASA@ My Library program in partnership with the Lunar and Planetary Institute , the American Library Association, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Algae Bloom

Stay safe this summer by looking out for harmful algal blooms

LANSING, Mich. – If you or your family will be living near or visiting Michigan waters this summer, it is important to be aware of potential harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by cyanobacteria, which can have an impact on the health of people and animals. Also called blue-green algae, cyanobacteria are a natural part of Michigan lakes, rivers and ponds. However, some cyanobacteria produce toxins, called cyanotoxins, that can make people and animals sick if they grow to form HABs.

Visit the Harmful Algal Bloom Picture Guide at Michigan.gov/habs for examples of HABs and other lake conditions mistaken for HABs.

MDHHS reminds Michiganders to avoid foam on lakes and rivers with high levels of PFAS

LANSING, Mich. – With the summer recreation season here, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is issuing a reminder that everyone should avoid foam on Michigan lakes and rivers known to have per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the water.

Foam on these water bodies can have much higher amounts of PFAS than the water, and swallowing foam with PFAS could be a health risk. Health advisories for foam exist on some waterbodies and specific advisories can be found in the PFAS Foam section at Michigan.gov/pfasresponse.
