Our History
YESTERDAY
The Newaygo Carnegie Library, dedicated on January 18, 1915, began several years earlier as a dream in the hearts of members of the Newaygo Women’s Civic League. Mrs. Juna Turner, the league president, and her fellow members, began collecting books to set up a small budding library in the old county courthouse. W.J. Bell, superintendent of the Portland Cement Company, joined the Civic League’s library project by contacting the Carnegie Corporation, requesting funds for a library building.
A grant of $5,000 was offered and subsequently accepted by the Newaygo Village council. Two stipulations made by the Carnegie Corporation were that Newaygo must support the new library at a cost of not less than $500 a year, and Newaygo must provide the site for the building. The cornerstone was placed on August 26, 1914. Miss Florence Truman was appointed the library’s first librarian.
TODAY
The Newaygo Area District Library (NADL) was legally established on September 1, 2005. From 1915 to the time of its district formation, the library existed as the Newaygo Carnegie Library. According to the 2020 census information, the NADL serves a population of 7,494 residents. The State Library of Michigan recognizes the NADL as a Class III Library.
NADL is supported by an operating millage of 1.1 mills levied in the City of Newaygo, Brooks Township, and the portion of Garfield Township within the Newaygo School District. The operating millage was approved on August 3, 2010. The Library underwent a building renovation in 2012 and re-opened in the new facilities in 2013. Since that time, the Library has pursued library programming for all ages.
Beginning in December 2017, the Library Board, Director and Staff, in conjunction with community input, began to plan new strategies to reach our community with excellent library services in changing times. In October 2018, the library unveiled its new five-year plan. NADL’s MISSION is to provide our community inclusive programming and outreach, robust collections, responsive services, and access to technology resources. Our responsive service goals for NADL are:
- COMMUNITY SPACE: Residents have a convenient, safe and welcoming place to gather and interact.
- CURRENT TOPICS & TITLES: Residents have information about popular culture and trends.
- LIFELONG LEARNING: Residents have resources and opportunities to satisfy curiosity and stimulate imagination.
- COMMUNITY INFORMATION: Residents have information about community resources, services, and activities.
- BUSINESS & CAREER INFORMATION: Emerging adults have information to make informed decisions.
The VISION for this library that began in the hearts of the Newaygo Women’s Civic League, of the early 1900’s and continues in hearts of Library members today, is that Newaygo Area District Library be the community’s space for residents to LEARN, CONNECT and EXPLORE.
